Cortisol, the Stress Hormone
Cortisol is the stress hormone. When we are fearful or distressed, cortisol is released from the adrenal glands as part of the fight or flight mechanism. It helps us run in case we are about to become the lunch of a lion, gets us to perform if we are nervous about speaking in public, to multitask when we are in a hurry or if we are unable to sleep if we are taking an exam the following day, it is cortisol that keeps us awake. Cortisol makes us ready for action in stressful situations.
It can be taken and measured from a blood sample, saliva or hair. In our research studies, we use cortisol hair levels to see how much stress a person had in the last three months. It is a very easy, non-invasive and safe method to measure cortisol levels.
